Record gas prices continue to rise

Another day, another record for Hawai'i gas prices.

The statewide average price for a gallon of regular reached a high of $3.81 yesterday, according to AAA Hawaii. It was the latest in a string of record-breaking increases over the past few weeks.

The statewide average was up 18 cents a gallon from a month ago and up 61 cents from a year ago. Around the state, the average was $3.73 in Honolulu, $3.91 in Hilo and $4.12 in Wailuku. All prices were records. The AAA doesn't report gas prices from Kaua'i, Lana'i or Moloka'i.

Hawai'i's average gas price was the third-highest in the nation behind California at $3.92 a gallon and Alaska at $3.86 a gallon. Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular hit a record high of $3.62.


TOURISM SEMINAR BEGINS MAY 13

The Hawai'i Tourism Authority will hold its fourth annual festivals and events seminar, featuring local and national experts who will speak on topics such as destination trends, leadership, networking and operations management.

The event will be held at several sites around the state, starting with a May 13 presentation at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i on the Big Island. On May 14, it will move to the Hawai'i Convention Center on O'ahu. It will be presented at the Wailea Marriott on Maui May 15 and at the Kaua'i Marriott on May 16.

LOCAL LAW FIRM AMONG NATION'S BEST

Honolulu law firm Davis Levin Livingston was one of 100 firms nationwide named to the Plaintiff's Hall of Fame for 2007 by the National Law Journal.

Davis Levin Livingston won one of the biggest jury verdicts in the country last year, according to a news release from the firm. A jury delivered a $36 million judgment against Hawai'i-based lumber supplier Honsador, which was sued by a Houston-based businessman who said he was secretly cut out of a deal to buy Honsador.

Firms were selected to the Hall of Fame based on nominations from National Law Journal readers.


BOB'S 'UKULELE OPENS 2ND STORE

Bob's 'Ukulele has opened another store in Waikiki, on the second level of the Royal Hawaiian Center next to P.F. Chang's.

The store offers a variety of instruments ranging in price from $18 to $2,300, from starter 'ukulele to locally made koa instruments. Specialty 'ukulele include soprano, concert, tenor and base varieties. The shop also carries six- and eight-string 'ukulele.

The store features a wide variety of brands including GString, Keli'i, Kamaka, Lanikai, Lahaina, KoAloha, S.I., Kala, Sonny-D, Universal, Tangi, and Kanile'a. It is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Free 'ukulele classes are held on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 10 to 11.


ALA MOANA MCDONALD'S IN NEW SPOT

McDonald's has relocated its Ala Moana Center restaurant from the makai side of the center to the mauka side next to Jeans Warehouse.

The restaurant is scheduled to open for business at the new location at 5 a.m. today. Hours of operation will be 5 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 6 a.m.-9 p.m. on Sundays.
