Sacramento State tops UH baseball in game 2

Advertiser Staff

Brian Smith pitched seven strong innings and Sacramento State topped Hawai'i, 7-3, tonight in the second game to split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium. UH won the opener, 3-1.

The left-handed Smith (3-1) allowed a run, five hits and two walks with three strikeouts for the Hornets (20-26 overall, 11-11 WAC). Trevor Paine pitched a perfect eighth. Brandon Sandoval was tagged for two runs on four hits and was pulled for Jeff Roth, who got Vinnie Catricala on a game-ending double play.

Matt Daly labored with control issues, allowing six runs, nine hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings for the Rainbows (23-25, 15-12).

The Hornets jumped on Daly in the first inning. Hunter Martinez led off with a single and Ryan Blair reached first when he grounded to short for a force at second. David Flores' single moved Blair to second. After a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, Daly struck out Gabe Jacobo. But Wes Oberlin drilled a home run to left to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.

Sacramento State added a run in the fourth. Brent Hottman walked with one out and Hunter Martinez hit what might have been a double play grounder to short, except the umpire got hit by the batted ball for a single. A wild pitch advanced the runners and Hottman scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Ryan Blair to make it 4-0.

The Hornets added two more in the fifth. Flores led off with a single and Jacobo walked. Oberlin hit a grounder near the foul line that third baseman Vinnie Catricala fielded, touched third and fired to second for at least a double play. But the home plate umpire Steve Corvi ruled the ball foul, prompting an argument by UH coach Mike Trapasso, who was ejected. Oberlin flied out, but Tim Wheeler singled to load the bases. Daly then struck out Brian Boyd, but walked Blake Crosby and Hottman to force in two runs to make it 6-0. Daly was pulled for Cameron Wheeler, who struck out Martinez to end the inning.

The Hornets continued their assault in the sixth. Flores doubled with one out, took third on a passed ball and scored on Jacobo's single to left to make it 7-0.

The Rainbows finally got on the board in the sixth. Kevin Fujii led off with a walk and one out later, scored on Greg Garcia's double to right to make it 7-1. Jon Hee reached on a single to short in which Garcia held second. After Brandon Haislet flied out to left, Jeff Van Doornum singled to right, but Garcia was gunned down trying to score from second on a throw from right fielder Boyd to catcher Hottman for the third out.

The Rainbows' rally came up short in the ninth, when they scored twice. Hee and Haislet hit successive singles up the middle to start the inning. Van Doornum doubled to right to score Hee, but Haislet slipped between third and home was out. Kevin Macdonald singled up the middle to score Van Doornum to make it 7-3. Sandoval was pulled for Jeff Roth, who got the double play to end the game.
