NanoGreen wins UH competition

A group that formed a company specializing in nanotechnology research and development took the $20,000 first prize in this year's UH Business Plan Competition.

NanoGreen Inc., created by Donavan Kealoha, Mehrdad Nejhad, Richard Russ, Atul Tiwari and Lee Taylor, also won the $20,000 UH Technology prize provided by the UH Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development.

The UH Shidler College of Business' Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship and E-Business announced the winners Thursday at a Waialae Country Club banquet. More than $60,000 in cash prizes was awarded.

Other winners:

  • Second prize ($10,000) went to SimTraining Hawaii, a venture "dedicated to improving patient safety through the use of state-of-the-art medical simulation-based training." Team members are Eileen Beamis, Benjamin Berg, Lawrence Burgess, Takuya Inoue and Kathleen Kihmm Connolly.

  • Third prize ($5,000) went to ProActive Carbon, which uses flash carbonization technology to handle the accumulation of agricultural biowaste. Team members are Vadim Kostyukhin, Keith Sakuda and Jim Vlahos. ProActive Carbon also won the $5,000 Sustainable Business prize given by Hawaiian Electric Co.

  • Top All-Student Team Prize ($2,000) went to KokuEco. Team members are Anna Chan, Damian Davila Rojas, Randy Ho, Elizabeth Oberholtzer and Adrian Pieron. The prize was given by Hawaii Business and Entrepreneur Acceleration Mentors.

  • Top Undergraduate Team Prize ($2,000) went to Banana Man's Tasty Treats Company. Team members are Jeff Berg, Christina Nguyen and Corey VanDlac. The prize was provided by Hawaii Strategic Development Corporation.
