KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt ran the second fastest 100 meters, finishing in 9.76 seconds at the Jamaica International Invitational.

Bolt's time at the National Stadium on Saturday was 0.02 seconds off Asafa Powell's world record.

"I was definitely surprised when I saw the time," Bolt said. "I was in shape for a 9.85."

Bolt recorded the time after two false starts and with a tail wind that was below the maximum allowed by the IAAF.

Darvis Patton of the United States was second in 10.08 seconds, and Daniel Bailey of Antigua was third in 10.12.

Powell, who is also Jamaican, did not compete because of a pulled pectoral muscle. The injury is not expected to keep him from running at the Beijing Olympics.

Powell set his record in a heat for the 100 at the Rieti Grand Prix in Italy in September.
