Punahou top seed in state baseball

Four-time defending state champion Punahou earned the top seed for this week's Wally Yonamine Foundation Hawai'i High School Athletic Association state baseball championships.

The Buffanblu (13-5-1), Interscholastic League of Honolulu champions, earned a first-round bye and open play Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium. Pearl City (13-2), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion and last year's state runner-up, is seeded second, followed by Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Waiakea (12-1) and Maui Interscholastic League winner Maui (13-3).

First-round play begins Wednesday at Les Murakami Stadium with Kailua (12-3) meeting Kamehameha-Hawai'i (9-3-1), Castle (10-5) facing Roosevelt (9-7), Saint Louis (17-4) playing Baldwin (12-4) and Mid-Pacific (15-4) playing 'Aiea (9-6).

The championship game is Saturday.

In the inaugural Division II state tournament, Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion Kaua'i (11-1) received the top seed. MIL champion St. Anthony (11-2) is seeded second, followed by OIA champion Waipahu (12-0-1) and BIIF champion Honoka'a (8-6).

First-round play begins on Wednesday at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park with Kahuku (9-4) facing Kohala (7-6), Radford (8-4-1) playing Moloka'i (6-7), Hawai'i Prep (7-6) playing Maryknoll (0-16) and Konawaena (7-7) facing Kalaheo (10-3).

BASEBALL

HILO SWEEPS HPU

Five pitchers teamed on a seven-hitter as host Hawai'i-Hilo held off Hawai'i Pacific, 4-3, yesterday to complete a season-ending doubleheader sweep at Wong Stadium.

Dayne Ogawa had two hits, scored a run and drove in one for the Vulcans (17-27). Emil DeAndreis pitched a hitless sixth and Dustin Gilmore worked a scoreless seventh and final inning for Hilo. Turhan Folse allowed three hits in three scoreless innings of relief for the Sea Warriors (31-20-1).

In the opener, Hilo scored seven runs in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead before holding off HPU, 10-7, in seven innings.

Michael Higa had three hits and two RBIs, and Keoni Manago drove in three runs for the Vulcans.

Danny Lee and Johnny Gentry each had two hits and Cheyne Hirota had two RBIs for the Sea Warriors, who scored five runs in the seventh to close to 10-7 but left the bases loaded.
