Swimming: Ilchenko, Lurz defend 5K open water crowns

SEVILLE, Spain — Larisa Ilchenko of Russia won her fifth straight 5-kilometer gold at the open water swimming championships today.

Thomas Lurz of Germany defended the men's title for the fourth straight year.

The 19-year-old Ilchenko, who also won the 10K event on Sunday, completed a third straight sweep of the two distances with a time of 1 hour, 4.6 seconds. Teammate Ekaterina Seliverstova finished 3.2 seconds back for her second straight silver. Chloe Sutton of the United States trailed by 5.3 seconds for bronze.

Lurz swam the two loops of the Guadalquivir river course in 54 minutes, 57.3 seconds to edge Vladimir Dyatchin of Russia by 1.5 seconds.
