WAILUKU
War Memorial tennis courts closed until July

The War Memorial Complex tennis courts are closed until mid-July for installation of a new lighting system.

The lights now illuminating the four courts have become a safety hazard due to corrosion and electrical problems, according to the Department of Parks and Recreation. They are being replaced with a new lighting system under a $250,710 contract awarded to Maui Master Builders.

The War Memorial courts were built 34 years ago, with some of the lighting fixtures replaced 10 years ago.

The courts are expected to reopen July 17.

Other county tennis courts open for play in Central Maui include Wells Park in Wailuku and the Kahului Community Center, both open from sunrise to 10 p.m.
