NL roundup: Big Unit ties Robin Roberts with 286th win

Associated Press

Randy Johnson's back was feeling good and his fastball was zipping past hitters.

It was just like the old days for the Arizona lefty, who earned his 286th victory by beating Philadelphia 6-4 on Tuesday night and stopping the Diamondbacks' three-game skid in the process.

"I felt great at the beginning of the game," said Johnson, who tied Robin Roberts for 27th on the career victories list. "It's probably the best I've felt all year as far as my back, my presence out there. Then I just lost my control a little bit and got a little frustrated with the execution of some of my pitches."

Johnson (2-1), who helped Arizona win a World Series in 2001 in his first stint there, retired his first five batters in his fifth start this season after returning from back surgery. He went six innings, matching his longest outing, and allowed four runs, six hits and struck out six. He also surrendered two homers, walked two and hit a batter.

The bullpen shut out the Phillies over the final three innings to preserve the win.

Brandon Lyon pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 12 chances, giving up singles to Carlos Ruiz and Shane Victorino before retiring Eric Bruntlett on a foul fly to right field.

Johnson said the bullpen "tends to get not as much credit as it should. But I think with our bullpen, it's incredible."

In other NL games, it was Atlanta 5, San Diego 3; Chicago 3, Cincinnati 0; Pittsburgh 12, San Francisco 6; Los Angeles 5, New York 4; Florida 3, Milwaukee 0; Houston 6, Washington 5; and St. Louis 6, Colorado 5

At Phoenix, Stephen Drew hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run outburst against Adam Eaton (0-1) in the fourth inning of the matchup between NL division leaders.

The Diamondbacks improved to a majors-best 22-11.

Although the Phillies left seven on base and committed two errors, Eaton took the blame for the loss. "You don't mind losing if you're beat, and when you beat yourself, that's when you really mind," he said. "I don't think Arizona beat us today. I beat ourselves."

Braves 5, Padres 3

At Atlanta, Chipper Jones hit his 10th homer, Jair Jurrjens (4-2) pitched six strong innings and Atlanta won its fourth straight to improve the NL's best home record to 12-4.

Mark Kotsay added two hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs. He also delivered the defensive play of the game in the fifth, making an over-the-shoulder catch at the warning track of Tadahito Iguchi's drive.

Cubs 3, Reds 0

At Cincinnati, Carlos Zambrano had his way with the Reds' slumping lineup, allowing only three hits in eight innings, and Ronny Cedeno singled home a pair of runs for visiting Chicago.

The Cubs won for only fourth time in 12 games. Zambrano (5-1) has won four straight decisions, two against the Reds.

Pirates 12, Giants 6

At Pittsburgh, Nate McLouth, dropped a spot in Pittsburgh's order to get more opportunities to produce runs, homered twice while driving in three runs and Zach Duke (1-2) won for the first time in nearly a year.

Duke (1-2) was winless in six starts this season and 12 games since June 12 before taking a shutout into the seventh.

Jonathan Sanchez (2-2) took the loss for the visiting Giants.

Dodgers 5, Mets 4

At Los Angeles, just 24 hours after hitting his first major league home run, Blake DeWitt got his first inside-the park homer — a two-run shot off the top of the right-field fence in the fifth inning — that gave the Dodgers a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

DeWitt also had a two-run single among his three hits, helping the Dodgers win for the 10th time in 11 games. Kong-Chih Kuo (2-1) struck out eight in 3 2-3 innings of hitless relief, and Takashi Saito got three outs for his fourth save.

Nelson Figueroa (2-2) allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings for the Mets.

Marlins 3, Brewers 0

At Miami, Scott Olsen allowed two hits in 8 2-3 innings, and Mike Jacobs hit a two-run homer to help Florida win at home.

Ryan Braun doubled in the fourth and Prince Fielder singled with two outs in the ninth for Milwaukee's only hits. Olsen came within a strike of his first complete game and the Marlins' first since Sept. 16, 2006, but he walked pinch-hitter Joe Dillon to load the bases with two outs in the ninth.

Kevin Gregg needed only one pitch to retire Bill Hall on a flyout for his sixth save in seven chances.

Astros 6, Nationals 5

At Houston, Carlos Lee had the go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning and Lance Berkman had a career-high five hits to lead the Astros.

The win was the Astros' fourth straight and gave them a winning record for the first time since April 22. Doug Brocail (2-0) got the victory, while Jose Valverde pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Cardinals 6, Rockies 5

At Denver, Braden Looper (5-1) pitched into the ninth inning in the longest outing of his career and went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals hung on.

Rick Ankiel hit his sixth homer of the season and Ryan Ludwick finished 4-for-4 with two doubles as the Cardinals won for the eighth time in 10 games.
