19th Rainbow Film Festival set for May 22-25

Twenty films, depicting alternative lifestyles and love stories, will be featured in the 19th annual Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival, set for May 22 through 25 at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts.

The Honolulu Gay & Lesbian Cultural Foundation is presenting the event, which includes feature films, documentaries and shorts tapping the gay and lesbian culture.

"Shelter," a film by Jonah Markowitz about family, friends, aspirations and the triumph of the human heart, is the opening night attraction at 7 p.m. May 22. Admission is $12.

"Tru Love," a feature written and directed by Stewart Wade, explores issues of bigotry and humanity with the focus on a woman who launches a Gay-Straight Alliance in school and discovers that her friendship with a closeted football player is in jeopardy. It shows at 5 p.m. May 25. Admission is $10.

A 1920s Garden Cabaret Party on May 25 at Linekona Arts Center, opposite the Honolulu Academy Arts, will culminate the festival.
