TONIGHT'S MUST-SEES

"When Harry Met Sally" (1989), 6 p.m., Oxygen. Nora Ephron's smart script was beautifully directed by Rob Reiner. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are excellent as friends who resist a romance.

"American Masters: Marvin Gaye: What's Going On," 9 p.m., PBS. Marvin Gaye seemed to resist expectations. At 21, he met (and soon married) a 36-year-old. At 33, he met (and soon married) a 16-year-old. Amid the pop Motown sound, he tried old ballads. Later, he would cut some of the label's biggest hits, including "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Then Gaye's 1971 "What's Going On" was filled with political consciousness. Motown founder Berry Gordy resisted it; he later called it "probably the greatest piece of work that Motown has ever put out." This is a richly varied story, reflecting Gaye's painful relationship with his father.

OF NOTE

"From Here to Eternity" (1953), 2 p.m., Turner Classic Movies. James Jones' novel was adapted into this deep portrait of Army life in Hawai'i, shortly before Pearl Harbor. Burt Lancaster, Donna Reed, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra and others are perfect.

"Price is Right Million Dollar Spectacular," 7 p.m., CBS. This show says it has already given $1 million three times. Now each prime-time hour has two shots at that —spinning the wheel or getting within $500 of the final showcase.

"Back to You," 7:30 p.m., Fox. Suzy Nakamura plays the new station manager, who sees big changes. When the staff confronts her, a crisis begins.

"American Idol," 8 p.m., Fox. The field will be trimmed to three.

"Law & Order," 9 p.m., NBC. With strikers at Legal Aid, there's a shortage of defense lawyers. Rubirosa is ordered to go to the other side, opposing Cutter, her usual prosecution colleague.

"Audition: Barbara Walters' Journey," 9 p.m., ABC. Charles Gibson interviews Walters, 78, whose autobiography is called "Audition."
