WAIALUA
Marine mural painted on Waialua school gym

Marine artist Hilton Alves has created a community mural at Waialua High & Intermediate School depicting Waimea Bay, surf and marine life.

Alves began painting the mural April 21 and completed it in nine days — working 10 hours a day with the help of more than 300 students.

The mural, "Mali'e Waimea," is part of the Surf Art Kids project to develop environmental awareness in youths and foster respect and love for the ocean and marine life through art.

The mural on the campus gymnasium is Hilton's fifth at island schools. There's another one at Waialua High & Intermediate School, one at Waialua Elementary School and two at Sunset Beach Elementary School.
