Kawika Shoji is a soft-spoken guy, but don't be fooled, he's a ferocious competitor and many took notice this season.

The Stanford sophomore setter and 2006 'Iolani graduate was named second team All-American by the AVCA after leading the Cardinal to a 17-11 record, a 14-game turnaround from 2007.

Shoji deflects much of the credit to his teammates.

"It was a combination of things: experience, hard work and our young team finally started to mesh and play together," he said. "Our freshmen provided a big lift for us this year."

Two of those freshmen were Spencer McLachlin (Punahou '07) and Jordan Inafuku (Kamehameha '06).

"Spencer and Jordan had a huge impact on our program this year," Shoji said. "They did everything they had to do as freshman to improve the team and we look forward to them having big seasons next year."

Shoji, who averaged 10.31 assists per game and totalled 990 for the year, says expectations will be raised for next season.

"Oh, absolutely. Our goal this year was to make the playoffs. Obviously we weren't happy just making it, but we achieved that goal and we want to improve and keep getting better," Shoji said.

Although he remains modest in his achievements, the award is not lost on Shoji.

"It's a great honor, because growing up in Hawai'i, I got to watch a lot of previous All-Americans in Yuval Katz, Costas Theocharidis ... some of my idols, and to be able to join their company is one of the greatest honors a volleyball player can have," Shoji said.

More schools in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation feature players from Hawai'i than ever before and Shoji says it is a testament to the level of competition locally.

"Basically, every team in the MPSF has a guy from Hawai'i and it's always uplifting to see a familiar face, either a former teammate or an opponent from high school on the other side of the net," Shoji said. "I feel proud seeing guys from Hawai'i in the league because it shows that such a small place can turn out such big talent in the sport of volleyball and it's a tribute to our state and the high school and club programs back home."
