Hanauma drowning victim was visitor from Tokyo

An autopsy today determined than an elderly visitor from Japan pulled from Hanauma Bay yesterday died from asphyxia due to accidental drowning.

The Honolulu medical examiner's office identified the man as Kengo Iiyama, 70, of Tokyo. Lifeguards brought Iiyama to shore at 12:11 p.m. and performed CPR on him until Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived.

Iiyama died at Straub Clinic & Hospital at 1:10 p.m.
