Kamehameha-Hawai'i rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to turn back Kailua, 4-2, yesterday in the opening round of the Wally Yonamine State High School baseball tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Warriors (10-3-1) will play fourth-seeded Maui in a quarterfinal at 11:30 a.m. today.

The Surfriders (12-4) had just added what they had hoped was an insurance run in the top of the sixth to make it 2-0, only to see the Warriors send eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning to rally.

"It took them six innings, but they finally put together a rally," Warriors coach Andy Correa said. "They did a terrific job. I'm very proud of them."

Winning pitcher Blake Amaral ignited the rally with a lead-off single and courtesy runner Ahi Ikeda scored on Russell Kackley's double to center off Kailua starter Ryan McMonigle. Kackley advanced to third on a wild pitch, forcing the Surfriders to bring the infield in. Kulani Soares grounded out to third, freezing the runner. With the infield still playing in, Makana Hirota lined a single to left-center to tie the game at 2.

McMonigle was pulled for Bryson Gauthe, who hit Alex Gerken with a pitch before retiring Taylor Goo on a fly to left. But Jayce Carvalho reached on a two-base throwing error from shortstop to bring in two runs that gave the Warriors their first lead of the day, 4-2. Carvalho took third on another error on the play, but was stranded there when Makana Cazimero grounded out to end the inning.

Amaral retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

"I thought my curve was working best," said the 6-foot-1 right-hander. "I had location."

The senior right-hander went the distance, allowing two runs, one earned, and six hits with eight strikeouts to get the win.

"He was injured most of the year and we had to use him kind of sparingly," Correa said. "He's pitching his best right now. I know how good Kailua is. They're a real good-hitting team and he kept them off-balanced."

McMonigle was charged with three runs, two earned, five hits and four walks in 5 ° innings for the Surfriders.

The Surfriders took a 1-0 lead in the third when Amaral hit Ryan Kinoshita with a pitch with two outs. Kinoshita stole second and scored on Kale Sumner's single to left.

They added a run in the sixth when Keoki Reis-Moniz doubled with one out, took third when Jordan Limahai reached on an error by the shortstop and scored on Bob Lastimosa's sacrifice fly to right that made it 2-0.

But it all was erased with the Warriors' rally.

"It feels great," Amaral said. "People made plays and hits when we needed to."
