Fire rages near Kahului Heliport

About 25 acres of sugar cane burned yesterday; no injuries were reported.

Lelepio Road near Kahului Heliport was closed to traffic yesterday afternoon as 25 acres of sugar cane burned on Maui. No structures were threatened or injuries reported.

The fire was reported at 12:54 p.m. and brought under control at 2:10 p.m. The cause was under investigation yesterday.

Thirteen county firefighters assisted by a unit from the state Airports Fire Department fought the fire with assistance of heavy equipment and a water tanker from Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Co.
