Online licensing renewals catch on

Advertiser Staff

Most of Hawai'i's engineers, architects, surveyors and landscape architects renewed their licenses online and got a discount on filing fees, the state said.

The state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs said the online renewal period for those categories concluded April 30, with nearly 7,000, or 96 percent of the total, choosing to renew their licenses online.

They are required by state law to renew their licenses every two years. During their last renewal cycle in 2006, more than 6,300 licensees, or about 94 percent of the total, renewed their licenses online.

The online renewal program has been around since 2001 and the discounts were first offered in 2005, but more types of licensing areas have been added.

The state offers online renewals in 32 of 45 licensing categories. The other 13 can't be done online because they require submittal of original documents and other verifications.

The Web site address is http://pvl.ehawaii.gov/renewals.

Recently added categories eligible for online renewals include: automobile dealers and salespeople, osteopaths, elevator mechanics, massage establishments and therapists, mental health counselors, nursing home administrators, pest control field representatives and operators, psychologists, veterinarians, and dispensing opticians

The department continues to offer a 25 percent customer appreciation credit on the renewal fee and a 10 percent discount on the compliance resolution fund fee for all licenses renewed online.

Instructions for completing the online renewal and details of the online discounts have been mailed to each current license holder. Online renewals will be accepted until midnight on June 30, except for dispensing opticians, who have until midnight July 1.
