Utah Valley stops baseball Rainbows, 5-1

Kevin Arendse hit a pair of solo home runs to back the strong pitching of Dan Christensen to lead Utah Valley over Hawai'i, 5-1, tonight in non-conference collegiate baseball at Les Murakami Stadium.

Christensen (2-7) allowed a run, eight hits and four walks with two stirkeouts in tossing his third complete game of the season for the Wolverines (16-35-1), an independent.

Nick Rhodes (4-6) allowed five runs, 11 hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings for UH (26-28).

Kevin Arendse led off the second with a home run off Rhodes to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

The Rainbows tied the game in the bottom of the second. Vinnie Catricala singled with one out and one out later, Landon Hernandez was hit by a pitch and Matt Roquemore reached on a single to first to load the bases. Greg Garcia walked to force in a run to tie the game at 1.

Arendse struck again in the sixth, blasting his second solo home run of the game with two outs to put the Wolverines ahead, 2-1.

The Wolverines increased their lead in the eighth. Scott Croshaw reached on a bunt single, took second on Kai Hatch's sacrifice and after Arendse was intentionally walked, scored on Adam Openshaw's single to make it 3-1. That ended Rhodes' night for Jayson Kramer. Jake Rickenback followed with an RBI single to right that moved Openshaw to third. Pinch hitter Tyler Garretson's RBI single to left snet Rickenback to second and made it 5-1 before pinch hitter Josh Hinckley grounded into an inning ending double play.
