Maui's Cyr wins NAIA golf championship

Point Loma Nazarene University junior Sam Cyr, a King Kekaulike graduate, won the NAIA Men's Golf Championship today at Indiana National Golf Club in Plymouth, Ind.

Cyr, who was tied for the lead after the second round and slipped into second after yesterday's third round, shot a 2-under 70 in today's fourth and final round to finish at 8-under 280. Cyr, last year's NAIA runner-up, moved into first place after today's round, but then had to wait for several other contenders to finish on the course. For the tournament, Cyr had rounds of 69, 70, 71 and 70 en route to his third straight All-American honor. Cyr, a two-time NAIA Region II champion, became the third Point Loma golfer to win a NAIA individual title.

Nick Zappin of Johnson & Wales (Fla.), yesterday's leader, went 8-over 80 today to fall to fifth. Blake Rowe-Sleeman of British Columbia finished second, five strokes behind Cyr.

Point Loma Nazarene finished sixth in the team standings at 1,189. British Columbia won the team title with a four-round total of 1,156.
