The University of Hawai'i softball team beat Mississippi State, 9-7, today in the opening round of the NCAA's Tempe Regional in Arizona.

Hawai'i (39-18) advances to tomorrow's championship round against Arizona State, which beat Stony Brook, 2-0.

Tomorrow's Hawai'i game will be played at 11 a.m.

Mississippi State (40-21) will face Stony Brook at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The three other Western Athletic Conference teams also won first round games. Fresno State defeated Sacramento State, 11-0 in five innings; Louisiana Tech outlasted Auburn, 1-0, in 12 innings and Nevada beat Purdue, 4-1.
