Woman hit by car while crossing highway

By Lynda Arakawa

A female pedestrian was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition last night after a car hit her on Kalaniana'ole Highway near Outback Steakhouse.

The accident was reported at 8:46 p.m.

Police said the woman appeared to be in her 40s. She was not in a crosswalk when she tried to cross the highway toward the beach park and was hit by a 2005 gold Infiniti that was traveling east, police said.

Police said the man driving the car stopped after the accident.

Neil Calantoc, a security officer for the Hawaii Kai Towne Center, said the woman was near Outback Steakhouse talking to a man on the other side of the highway shortly before she ran across the street.

Police closed the east-bound lanes of Kalaniana'ole Highway to conduct their investigation.

Hawai'i has one of the nation's highest rates of pedestrian deaths per capita. The state is installing crosswalk timers and other safety measures.
