Six chemical munitions left to destroy at Schofield

U.S. Army munitions experts have disarmed more than 90 percent of the aging chemical weapons found at Schofield Barracks by using state-of-the art equipment known as the "Transportable Detonation Chamber," Army officials said Friday in a news release.

As of Tuesday evening this past week, 65 of the 71 recovered chemical weapons had been safely and successfully destroyed without incident, according to the release. Air monitoring confirmed there was no release of any harmful substances and that the munitions, including the chemical component, were completely destroyed.

The remaining six munitions will be destroyed following system maintenance. The detonation chamber has worked "remarkably well," destroying as many as 20 munitions in one day, Army officials said
