This weekend's third annual Hawaii Book & Music Festival on the grounds of Honolulu Hale offers much — not just for literary types, young readers, music lovers and those interested in Hawaiian culture, but also presentations of interest to home cooks, and, especially, cookbook collectors.

Among those who will be there, giving talks and/or cooking demonstrations: local food writers, including former Advertiser food editor Joan Namkoong (author of "Go Home, Cook Rice"), current food editor Wanda Adams (author of "The Island Plate," "Island-Style Entertaining" and the upcoming "Island Plate II"), Honolulu magazine restaurant critic and radio personality John Heckathorn with guests chefs, Honolulu Star-Bulletin food editor Betty Shimabukuro (author with Muriel Miura of "What Hawai'i Likes to Eat") and editors of "DASH of Aloha" (a new book based on a heart-healthy living plan).

Adams will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a cookbook and share anecdotes about Hawai'i food history learned in writing "The Island Plate"; and the community cookbook panel, too, will talk about how their books came together — valuable information for those who may be thinking of producing a fundraising book.

Namkoong will discuss how to eat healthily, local-style. Shimabukuro will share answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Island food. Among Heckathorn's guests: Rodney Uyehara of the new Beachhouse restaurant.

But here's the event you don't want to miss if you're one of those who believes that the one who dies with the most cookbooks wins: a silent auction of classic Island cookbooks and booklets put together by food editor Adams. Also to be auctioned: brand-new local and national new cooking releases, donated by The Advertiser and local publishers. Proceeds of the auctions, to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Food and Cookbook pavilion, will benefit Hawaii Literacy and Read to Me International. Just wander into the tent, look over the offerings, make your bid, then wander back at the end to see if you scored. Cash and checks only.

And, as with any Hawai'i festival, there will be food — samplings at some cooking demonstrations, as well as food sales in booths around the Frank F. Fasi Civic Grounds at Punchbowl and King streets. The Food and Cookbook pavilion, and the food booths, all are clustered along King Street.
