It looked briefly like Kaua'i was going to come up empty in the third inning yesterday against Lana'i. But a defensive miscue by the Pine Lasses opened the flood gates.

Kaua'i scored five runs in the inning on three walks, two hits and a critical error to beat Lana'i, 6-2, in the semifinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Softball Division II Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Kaua'i, the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion and No. 1 seed, will play Pac-Five for the title today at 5 p.m.

Last season, Kaua'i made it to the state Division II title game, but lost to Sacred Hearts.

"We're not here this year happy to be in the championship game," said Kaua'i coach Darrell Borrero. "We want to win the whole thing."

Wailana Borrero, a junior right-hander, pitched a four-hitter with two walks and 10 strikeouts for Kaua'i (13-1).

In the third, Red Raiders' No. 9 hitter Alyssa Carvalho drew a one-out, four-pitch walk. Jaezelle Balilea followed with a routine fly ball to the right fielder, who dropped the ball for an error. If the ball had been caught, the right fielder would have had an easy inning-ending double play by throwing to first base.

"Like I told the girls in the beginning when we started, we have to play perfect defense to win the game," said Lana'i coach Roderick Sumagit. "We might have had a different outcome (if the catch was made), but I believe we played very well."

Krystal Ijima stepped to the plate with runners at first and second, and delivered a two-run double to left-center and took third on the throw home. After a walk, Jessica Iwata hit a two-run triple that went off the right fielder's glove. Iwata later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

All 21 outs recorded by Wailana Borrero, the coach's daughter, were in the infield.

"My fastball was working," she said. "I was hitting my corners and throwing a few drops this time and they were chasing, so I just kept doing that."

PAC-FIVE 11, KAPA'A 0

Pac-Five coach Randy Oyama didn't need his background as a lawyer to convince anyone his Wolf Pack had their way yesterday against the Warriors.

Leeann Lariosa and Sheridan Mahelona combined on a four-hitter, and Pac-Five scored six runs in the second inning to advance to the final against Kaua'i.

"I think the team is feeling good about how they're playing right now," Oyama said. "They work hard at practices, and they're kind of jelling right now, getting on a momentum streak here."

Lariosa, a senior right-hander, allowed two singles over the first four innings and struck out six for Pac-Five, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu representative.

"My risers were working really good, my screws," she said. "I didn't really go to my curve too much. I relied on a lot of fastballs, too."

Mahelona, a sophomore right-hander, gave up two doubles over the final three innings.

Pac-Five, which improved to 9-8, had six hits and four stolen bases in the six-run third to take a 7-0 lead.

Lariosa belted a solo homer to left in the fourth and Joedee Lovell hit a solo homer to left in a three-run seventh inning.
