The Maui Ocean Center celebrates World Ocean Day on June 6.

ON THE VALLEY ISLE: Maui Ocean Center offers a 50 percent discount to kama'aina and military through May 31. The center's Sea Talk series continues with Gary Greenberg and his book, "A Grain of Sand: Nature's Secret Wonder," a collection of more than 200 color photographs of individual grains of sand from around the world taken using micro-photographic techniques. The pictures reveal differences in color, texture, size and shape and the presentation discusses the history of sand and the photographic process developed by Greenberg. Each grain of sand has a story to tell covering millions of years of geological and biological history. 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Open Ocean exhibit. 808-270-7075.

The center celebrates World Ocean Day with a "Think Globally, Eat Locally" dinner on June 6, featuring a buffet of sustainable seafood and Maui-grown products. Live entertainment is by Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Nathan Aweau. OceanFest weekend is planned for June 7-8.

Admission: $12 for Hawai'i residents and military with ID; $6 ages 3-12, $10.50 for ages 65 and older. The Seascape Ma'alaea restaurant is offering 50 percent off a second entree of equal or lesser value to all guests, not combinable with other offers or discounts.
