The Central Pacific forecast is for three to four tropical cyclones in 2008, which is fewer than the typical average of four or five a year.

Tropical cyclone is the umbrella term for hurricanes, typhoons, tropical depressions and tropical storms.

The Central Pacific, which includes Hawai'i, is transitioning from a La Nina condition to a "neutral situation," said Jim Weyman, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

La Nina is when the surface temperature of the ocean is slightly cooler than normal. El Nino is when the surface temperature is slightly warmer.

Even though the forecast is for fewer storms than usual this year, "That doesn't mean we should be less prepared," Weyman said.

At a news conference today with Weyman, Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona declared the week of May 18 to 24 Hurricane Preparedness Week in Hawai'i. The hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.

Last year, there were two tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific. Hurricane Flossie generated hurricane force winds on the southern part of the Big Island.
