Police kill alleged mass murderer in Philippines

Associated Press

MANILA, Philippines — Police fatally shot a man today who killed eight people, including five children, in a rampage south of Manila, a regional police commander said.

Chief Superintendent Ricardo Padilla said Bernabe de Fiesta died in a shootout with police using the same M-16 automatic rifle he allegedly used while going house to house the day before in Laguna province.

"We consider the case closed," Padilla said.

According to the police official, de Fiesta was upset that people in his village of Hornalan were making fun of him.

De Fiesta allegedly stole the rifle and seven ammunition magazines from his uncle and used them to kill eight people, including five children, at several households, Padilla said.

Six people were injured, including two children.

Padilla said a group of undercover officers were ordered to Hornalan on Tuesday after failing to find de Fiesta. The officers spotted the suspect in the village and ordered him to surrender.

"He resisted arrest and shot it out with my men and was killed in the process," he said.

The killings came three days after unidentified men barged into a bank in another town in Laguna and shot nine people to death. A 10th victim died later.
