The Army has reduced the conviction and sentence of a Hawai'i-based soldier tried this year for the alleged assault of an unarmed Iraqi.

Brig. Gen. J. Michael Bednarek, acting commander of the 25th Infantry Division, reduced Spc. Christopher Shore's aggravated assault conviction to assault.

The change erases Shore's felony record.

Shore's platoon sergeant, Sgt. 1st Class Trey Corrales, was found not guilty last month of premeditated murder in the June 2007 incident involving the Iraqi.

The general also reduced Shore's prison sentence from 120 days to 72 days, or the equivalent of the time already served.

Shore, of Winder, Ga., was also allowed to regain his old rank, specialist. He had been demoted to private.
