3-day Pride Festival begins June 26

By Wayne Harada

The Honolulu Pride Festival, a three-day event sponsored by the newly-formed Honolulu Pride Festival Foundation, will be held June 26-28 to celebrate gay pride and promote a sense of community.

The festival will be launched with a Mr., Miss, Ms. Gay Pride competition, at 6 p.m. June 26, at Fusion Waikiki. The winners vying for the titles will be determined by the highest amount of donations amassed between June 2 and 26, with proceeds benefiting Save the Foodbasket and the Pride Festival.

Other key events:

• The Ohana Gathering, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 27, at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park. A lu'au style backyard barbecue dinner will be served, with entertainment.

• The Annual LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) Pride Parade, from 9 a.m. June 28, from Magic Island, proceeding on Ala Moana to Kalakaua, concluding at Kapi'olani Park. All diverse elements of the gay community will participate; with floats, marching bands and organizations.

• The Annual LGBTQ Pride Festival, from 11:30 a.m. June 28, at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park. A post-parade celebration, with food and beverage vendors, entertainment, contests, arts and crafts.

Patrick J. Miller is board chairman of the Honolulu Pride Festival Foundation.
