Tadd Fujikawa shoots 2-under 70 in Japan event

Advertiser Staff

Moanalua High School junior Tadd Fujikawa shot 2-under-par 70 in the opening round of the Munsingwear Open KSB Cup Thursday at Tojigaoka Marine Hills Golf Club in Okayama.

Fujikawa, who played in the early wave, was tied for 19th when he finished.

The early leader in the $971,000 Japan Golf Tour Organization event is Masao Nakajima at 66.

Fujikawa birdied two of his first four holes to make the turn in 34. He added another birdie at the 11th to climb into the Top 10, but bogeyed Nos. 15 and 16 before rallying for his fourth birdie at the 17th. He needed just 26 putts in his round.

The 17-year-old is coming off a 48th-place finish earlier this month at The Crowns. That was the first time he made a cut on the JGTO tour and the second time he made a cut since turning pro last summer. Fujikawa won last month's Mid-Pacific Open.

Ryo Ishikawa, 16, is defending champion at the Munsingwear Open. He was at 7-over after 16 holes Thursday.

The top 60 and ties after the second round make the cut.
