Tennis: Chan, Srebotnik in Strasbourg semifinals

Associated Press

STRASBOURG, France — Chan Yung-jan of Taiwan upset seventh-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan 6-4, 6-2 today to reach the semifinals of the Strasbourg International.

Chan, who has never won a singles tournament, broke Sugiyama's serve five times and saved nine break points on her own service game.

She will faces No. 5 Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia, who beat Peng Shuai of China 6-4, 7-5.

Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland upset second-seeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine 7-6 (6), 6-2. She will face defending champion Anabel Medina Garrigues, who advanced when Flavia Pennetta withdrew with a thigh injury.

Bacsinszky broke Bondarenko's serve five times to stay on course for her first career title. The 18-year-old player reached the semis for the first time since losing to the recently retired Justine Henin in February in Antwerp, Belgium.
