Waipahu man extradited for 1987 murder

A 54-year-old man Waipahu man waived extradition and was taken by authorities from Orange County, Calif., back to the mainland today to stand trial for the 1987 murder for hire and rape of a 20-year-old woman.

Richard Curtis Morris Jr., who arrested Monday at Honolulu Circuit Court on a Caloifornia warrant, was identified as a suspect in the cold case by a hit from CODIS, the computer software program that operates local, state, and national databases of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence, and missing persons.

Morris' criminal record includes five convictions, one for felony habitual operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant and four petty misdemeanors for driving under the influence.
