Kapolei achievement award event honors 5 people, 1 volunteer group

Five individuals and a community group were recognized at the 19th Kapolei Outstanding Achievement Awards ceremony last night at The Pavilion at Ihilani.

The awards honor those who have helped define Kapolei in its growth as O'ahu's second city. It is sponsored by Kapolei Property Development, a subsidiary of the James Campbell Co., the master planner and major landowner of the region.

For the first time, a KOA Award was given to a young leader. Mike Rennebu, youth development director for the Hale Pono Boys & Girls Clubhouse in 'Ewa Beach, was recognized for successfully implementing after-school drug-prevention services and activities for youths.

Other winners:

  • Rich Griffin, landscape coordinator of Island Pacific Academy, the environment award. Griffin initiated a landscape education project promoting the use of endemic, indigenous and drought-tolerant plants at the Kapolei private school.

  • The 2007 Kapolei Sunset Festival Committee, the community service award. The group of volunteers from diverse community backgrounds organized a two-day festival at Kapolei Regional Park last summer.

  • Michael Leskovec, a Maka-kilo resident, the community service award for his work with the Makakilo-Kapolei Lions Club, the Makakilo-Kapolei Youth Baseball League and other community organizations.

  • Margarette Pang, founder and executive director of the Dyslexia Tutoring Center of Hawai'i in Kapolei, the education award. Pang's organization provides tutoring, self-esteem building and education related to dyslexia.

  • James Matthew Stamm, president and chief executive of North Star Scientific Corp., the business leader award. Stamm's Kapolei-based company develops high-power communications and radar equipment.
