Hui Malama Learning Center gets $15,000 grant

The Dowling Community Improvement Foundation has given a $15,000 grant to the Hui Malama Learning Center, which offers GED classes, educational tutoring services, test preparation, courses in job and study skills, and English as a second language instruction.

In 2007, Hui Malama served more than 1,200 people, most under the age of 19, according to executive director Pualani Enos. Seventy percent of the agency's clients are Native Hawaiian, she said.

The center also offers cultural and environmental-based education alternatives for middle-school students, and tobacco and crystal methamphetamine preventative education.
