WAHIAWA
Elementary school to celebrate 100th birthday

A two-day surf contest for surfers of all experience levels will kick off tomorrow at Kuhio Beach in Waikiki.

The event is sponsored by Hope Chapel Waikiki, and entry into the contest costs $10.

Surfers should report to the beach (in front of the Duke Kahanamoku statue) at 6:45 a.m. tomorrow to participate.

Hope Chapel Waikiki will also hold free cardio-pulmonary resuscitation classes, at 10 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

Also on Sunday, in addition to the awards ceremony for the surfing contest, there will be a family picnic at 10 a.m.

Any proceeds from the two-day festivities will go to the children of Della Lynn Dikito, who was apparently killed by her husband in a murder-suicide April 25.

Wei-en "Danny" Kao, an Emergency Medical Technician for American Medical Response in Honolulu, was selected by the American Ambulance Association to receive the Star of Life, the highest award an Emergency Medical Service worker can receive.

Of more than 120,000 EMS professionals in the United States, Kao was among 108 to be honored with a Star of Life. He received his award this month in Washington, D.C.

Kao, a seven-year veteran, was nominated by co-workers for his dedication to his profession and his devotion to the community he serves.Wahiawa Elementary School will celebrate its 100th anniversary today.

The school was established in 1899 to educate children of farmers brought in from California and was located on Lehua Street at the current site of Wahiawa General Hospital, according to the school Web site. The school had one teacher, who was paid $480 a year, and 10 students.

The first official school house was built in 1908, with school facilities growing as the town population expanded. Decades later the school moved to its current location on Glen Avenue.

Gov. Linda Lingle is among those scheduled to help the school celebrate its centennial.
