Fatal crash reported on Kamehameha Highway near Waimea

Advertiser Staff

A man who appeared to be in his mid-20s was killed this morning after his car crashed and overturned on Kamehameha Highway at Punalau Place near Waimea on the North Shore.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said the man, who was the lone occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:56 a.m.

The crash occurred about 5:20 a.m. It happened directly in front of the "Left Overs" surfing area as the car was traveling toward Kahuku.

Three fire companies and a battalion chief were sent to the scene following the crash based on reports that a person was pinned in the wreckage.

The fatal crash comes just two days after Honolulu police urged motorists to be careful driving with the advent of the Memorial Day holiday weekend and the high school graduation party season.
