Advertiser Staff and News Services

Former Honolulu resident Chan Kim shot a 3-under-par 69 today and is tied for fourth two strokes behind leader Gregor Main after the first round of the Thunderbird International Junior golf tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Stephanie Kono, a Punahou senior, shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 15th in the girls division of the tournament, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association.

Main, of Danville, Calif., leads William Kropp of Edmond, Okla., and Josh Jones of The Colony, Texas, by one stroke at the Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course.

Kim, a former Hawai'i state amateur and high school champion, moved to Chandler, Ariz., after his junior year last year, to pursue more golfing opportunities.

Marika Lendl of Bradenton, Fla., shot a 71 and leads the girls division by one stroke over Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., and Stacy Kim of Columbus Ga.

The field includes 48 boys and 30 girls, ages, 12-18, from 17 states and 11 foreign countries.

The tournament ends Monday.
