Soccer: Donovan must wait for 100th US game

Associated Press

WEMBLEY, England — Landon Donovan will have to wait for his 100th international appearance.

The Los Angeles Galaxy forward was dropped from the United States roster for today's exhibition game against England at Wembley.

Donovan has had a tight groin during training in England this week, and the U.S. team decided to rest him after testing his fitness today. Donovan featured in the Galaxy's 3-1 win over Kansas City on Saturday, and has another MLS game against Toronto this coming Saturday.

At 26, Donovan is set to become the youngest American — and fourth youngest in history — to reach the 100-game milestone.

He'll break the U.S. record set by Cobi Jones, who was 27 when he reached the mark. Jones owns the mark for most games played with the U.S. team, with 164.

Donovan's next chance will come in another exhibition, at Spain on June 4. The U.S. also plays Argentina at East Rutherford, N.J. (June 8), before opening World Cup qualifying on June 15 against Barbados at Carson, Calif.

"It's amazing that, at 26, to be hitting 100 caps," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. "Certainly over the last six to eight years, he's been an important figure in so many U.S. national team games. And we hope there are a lot more games to come."

Donovan's Galaxy teammate David Beckham was to play his 101st game for England, after reaching the century mark against France in March.
