Myanmar cyclone relief fundraiser event set for Tuesday

The Myanmar Cyclone Relief Fundraiser, featuring local celebrities, chefs and cultural performances, is set for 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at The Waterfront at Aloha Tower..

The event is organized by the Myanmar Association of Hawaii and the Hawaii Theatre. Comedian Augie T. will serve as the evening's emcee.

"This is an opportunity to pull together and show our visitors and the world how much aloha our community has for all who suffer from calamity," Burton White, artistic director and general manager of the Hawaii Theatre Center, said in a news release.

Early this week, United Nations officials estimated less than half the 2.4 million people victimized by the May 2-3 storm had received emergency assistance. And official government estimates put the death toll at about 78,000, with an additional 56,000 people missing.

Tin Myaing Thein, of the Myanmar Association of Hawaii, said in a news release, "This is a critical time in the relief efforts for the victims of the Myanmar cyclone."

Reserved table seating (for 10) with food service is available at the "Gold Table" level of $5,000; and "Silver Table," $3,000. Food from Chai's Roy's, Sam Choy's and other restaurants will be served with a no-host bar. Reserved seating is available with a $100 ticket, and general admission is $50.

All proceeds are 100 percent tax deductible through the Myanmar Association of Hawaii. Donations, in lieu of attending, may be made by sending checks to Myanmar Association of Hawaii, 720 N. King St., Honolulu, HI 96817. Please memo: "Burmese Cyclone Victims."
