Police yesterday arrested a 12-year-old Makakilo boy who allegedly stole his grandfather's car and pistol.

Police arrested the youth in the car on Makakilo Drive near Nohohale Street at 2:50 p.m. and recovered a gun.

The youth was booked for investigation of auto theft.

FATAL-COLLISION SUSPECT IN COURT

An 18-year-old man charged with causing a collision last year in Waimanalo that killed two women had his initial appearance yesterday at District Court.

Tyler Nainoa Duarte of Waimanalo is accused of two counts of first-degree negligent homicide and failure to render aid in an accident involving death or serious bodily injury. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for tomorrow at District Court.

Police said speeding and alcohol appeared to be factors in the Jan. 20, 2007, collision in which the 1997 Ford Explorer driven by Duarte hit a 1990 Honda Accord on Kalaniana'ole Highway at Inoa'ole Street, killing Michelle Benevedes, 39, and Racquel Akau, 38. Duarte was arrested after running from the scene of the collision.

Duarte's bail is $30,000.

MAN, 50, ARRESTED IN BANK ROBBERY

A 50-year-old man surrendered Tuesday in connection with a bank robbery Saturday in Lihu'e, Kaua'i police said.

Mark Chambers, of Hanalei, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

A man entered First Hawaiian Bank at Kukui Grove Center about 11:40 a.m. Saturday, demanded money from a bank teller and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

CABBY'S ALLEGED ASSAILANT CHARGED

Prosecutors yesterday charged a Kalihi man in connection with allegedly trying to rob a cab driver at knifepoint Monday night in Wai'alae.

Hai Ngoc Pham, 34, is accused of first-degree robbery. He was being held in lieu of $20,000 bail overnight at the main police station cellblock and has an initial appearance scheduled for today at District Court.

The male cab driver, 56, was not injured.

Pham was sentenced in May 1996 to 10 years in prison for first-degree terroristic threatening and a firearms offense.

HAWAI'I FUGITIVE DETAINED IN GUAM

A media executive was under house arrest in Guam and facing extradition to Hawai'i, where he is accused of stealing funds from a landscaping company.

Evan Daniel Montvel-Cohen, 42, was arrested Tuesday at Guam International Airport on a $75,000 warrant stemming from an April 15 O'ahu grand jury indictment charging him with theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, forgery and money laundering.
