Maui workshop slated on people with disabilities

KAHULUI, MAUI— A free, informational workshop for service providers, persons with disabilities and their families will be held Thursday, June 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hale Mahaolu Elua Cafeteria in Kahului, the County of Maui Commission on Persons with Disabilities announced yesterday in a news release.

The public is invited, and is asked to RSVP no later than Tuesday, June 3 by calling Commission Chair Norita DeLima at 871-2038.

Topics will include Social Security benefits, employment, housing options and transportation alternatives. Mayor Charmaine Tavares will make opening remarks; light refreshments will be served, according to the news release.

Transportation is available with advance notice through Roberts Hawaii and Maui Economic Opportunity. To register for the County's ADA Para Transportation Service, call 270-7511. Registered passengers are asked to call Marianne at Roberts Hawaii, 871-4838, to schedule their ride. Persons with disabilities may also call 877-7651 to schedule a ride with MEO. It is recommended that persons requiring para transportation schedule their rides as early as possible. Those who plan to drive to the event are asked to park in unmarked stalls or along Hina Avenue.

Persons with special needs who also require special accommodations to assist with their successful participation at the workshop (i.e., large print, taped materials, sign language interpreter, etc.), may call the Department of Housing and Human Concerns at 270-8203 at least five working days before the scheduled event.

The Commission on Persons with Disabilities is staffed by the County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns.
