LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A 50-year-old Hanalei man accused of robbing the First Hawaiian Bank branch at Kukui Grove Center on Saturday has two prior bank robbery convictions, according to Kaua'i Police Department records.

Mark Chambers was convicted in 1982 for a bank robbery in Los Angeles, for which he served six months in jail and five years probation, police records show.

Chambers also was convicted in 1997 for a robbery of the Bank of Hawaii branch in Kapa'a. It was not known how long Chambers was sentenced for that crime.

Chambers' criminal record from 1979 to the present also includes convictions on charges of contempt of court, failure to appear, driving under the influence (three times, in 1980, 1991 and 1994) driving without a license and theft of personal property. Charges are from California and Hawai'i.

Chambers turned himself in to Kaua'i police Tuesday and is being held at the Kaua'i police cellblock on a bank robbery charge with bail set at $20,000.

A man entered the First Hawaiian Bank at Kukui Grove Center about 11:40 a.m. Saturday, demanded money from a bank teller and left with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was injured in the incident and no weapon was displayed, police said.
