WAILUKU — Halloween night was more trick than treat for the Maui High School football team.

Baldwin, ranked seventh in The Advertiser's top 10 poll, scored on the game's second play from scrimmage, rolled up 470 yards of offense and sent the Sabers to their 20th consecutive Maui Interscholastic League loss, 40-14 on Friday at War Memorial Stadium.

''Baldwin is a very good team this year and they deserve to be the champs,'' Maui High coach Roderick Fong said to The Maui News

Buta Wilhelm-Ioane threw for 230 yards and four touchdowns for Baldwin (7-1, 6-0 MIL), and added another score on the ground. Joshua Tam Sing was his favorite target Friday, hauling in five passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

Wilhelm-Ioane found Tam Sing wide open on the game's second play for a 32-yard scoring strike. On the Bears' ensuing possession, Wilhelm-Ioane connected with Chauncey Wells on the left sideline at the Maui High 16-yard line, then Wells bounced off a tackler and scored to give Baldwin a 14-0 lead.

Maui (0-8, 0-6) answered on its next possession, 66 yards in eight plays, capped by a 2-yard run by quarterback Jordan Inamasu to cut the lead to 14-7.

''We did OK, we could have done better. We had some breakdowns,'' Baldwin coach A.J. Roloos said. ''We were just trying to get the kids clicking because we're working for the state tournament coming up.

''Defense is ready. We're just trying to get the offense there. The defense will be ready, we're loaded on defense,'' he said.

The Bears defense was stellar, with seven tackles for loss, three sacks, an interception in the Baldwin end zone by Kainalu Garso, a blocked punt and a safety. In addition, the Bears held Inamasu, second in the MIL in passing yards, to an 11-of-26 night for 131 yards and a touchdown pass.

After CeeJay Santos knocked in a 45-yard field goal off the cross bar to make it 17-7, Maui botched a snap attempt at its own 18-yard line. The ball went into the end zone and the Sabers batted the ball over the end line for a safety.

But the Sabers defense held after the free kick, when Kyler Smith intercepted Wilhelm-Ioane's attempted middle screen and returned it to the Baldwin 45-yard line.

After Maui turned the ball over on downs, the Bears took a 26-7 lead when Wilhelm-Ioane found Tam Sing in the right corner of the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown pass.

After a scoreless third quarter, Wilhelm-Ioane scored on an 8-yard keeper on the second play of the fourth quarter. He followed that with a 10-yard pass to Sheldon Leong at the 7:02 mark to give Baldwin a 40-7 lead.

The Sabers couldn't get anything going Friday, managing just 140 yards of offense through 3 1/2 quarters before a 80-yard touchdown drive that ended with 3:51 to play when James Fenton caught a 36-yard pass from Inamasu to make it 40-14.

''Maui High just never quit,'' Roloos said. ''Coach Fong, he's got something good going there. The kids never gave up.''
