BOSTON — Kevin Garnett played much better in the 1,000th game of his career than in his first of this season.

Boston's intense leader had 18 points and 10 rebounds three days after a mediocre season opener and became the youngest player in NBA history to play in 1,000 regular-season games when the Celtics beat the Chicago Bulls, 96-80, last night.

"It feels crazy," Garnett said. "To sit here and have a plateau with 1,000 games says a lot not only about my conditioning, but, through knocking on wood countless times, taking care of my body and trying to be the best player that I can be."

Garnett reached the 1,000-game mark at the age of 32 years, 165 days — three days before the 13th anniversary of his NBA debut with Minnesota when he scored eight points, but made all four shots, as a substitute. He broke the record of 33 years, 24 days set by Shawn Kemp on Dec. 20, 2002.

Kobe Bryant is two years and three months younger and already has played 868 games. And LeBron James is already up to 393 games and won't turn 24 until Dec. 30.

"That's amazing," Boston coach Doc Rivers said of Garnett's record. "I'm assuming Kobe will break the record and LeBron will break the record, but it's nice to have."

So is a 2-0 record this season after the Celtics' 17th championship banner was raised before Tuesday night's 90-85 win over James' Cleveland Cavaliers. Garnett scored just 11 points on 5-for-15 shooting in that game.

"Tonight I felt a lot more poised," he said after making 7 of 11 shots.

This one was much easier as Boston's active defense from the start held Chicago to 4-of-23 shooting in the first quarter.

Rookie point guard Derrick Rose, the top pick in the NBA draft, led the Bulls with 18 points.

HEAT 103, KINGS 77

Dwyane Wade had 20 points and eight assists, Michael Beasley added 17 points and host Miami scored a whopping 41 points off turnovers to rout Sacramento in its home opener.

RAPTORS 112, WARRIORS 108

Chris Bosh scored 31 points, including two free throws to force overtime, Anthony Parker had 23 and host Toronto opened the extra period with an 8-0 run to turn back Golden State.

76ERS 116, KNICKS 87

Elton Brand had 24 points and 14 rebounds and Andre Miller added 20 points and eight assists and host Philadelphia used a 18-7 third-quarter run for a 84-74 lead in cruising past New York.

GRIZZLIES 86, MAGIC 84

Rudy Gay scored 29 points, including an 18-foot jumper as time expired to lift Memphis over Orlando to win its home season opener for the first time since moving to Memphis in the 2001-02 season.

TRAIL BLAZERS 100, SPURS 99

LaMarcus Aldridge hit a shot from the top of the key to make it 100-97 with 35 seconds left and host Portland held on to beat San Antonio when Michael Finley's shot at the buzzer rimmed out.

NUGGETS 113, CLIPPERS 103

Linas Kleiza made two free throws with nine seconds to tie the game at 94-all and Allen Iverson scored nine of his 25 points in the final 3:35 of overtime and visiting Denver overcame an 18-point halftime deficit to beat Los Angeles.

OVER AND BACK

GRIZZLIES

Memphis exercised the fourth-year option on forward Rudy Gay and guard Kyle Lowry, while picking up the third-year option on guards Mike Conley and Javaris Crittenton.

New York placed guard Stephon Marbury on the inactive list before last night's 116-87 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Marbury is a former All-Star reportedly scheduled to earn $21.9 million this season.

PACERS

Indiana signed forward Danny Granger, its first-round draft pick — 17th overall — in the 2005 NBA Draft, to a contract extension. Terms of the contract extension were not announced.

TRAIL BLAZERS

Forward Martell Webster, out until December recovering from a stress fracture in his foot suffered during the preseason, and Portland agreed to a four-year contract extension reportedly worth $20 million.

WARRIORS

Golden State exercised its contract options for the 2009-10 season on guard Marco Belinelli and forward Brandan Wright yesterday, but declined its option on guard Marcus Williams.
