BeachBoys, Honu win in baseball

Buster Posey went 2 for 3 with a run scored yesterday as the Waikiki BeachBoys extended their winning streak to seven games with a 3-2 triumph over the West Oahu CaneFires at Hans L'Orange.

The victory sent Waikiki (14-11) into sole possession of first place in Hawaii Winter Baseball's Eastern Division.

Posey singled to lead off the sixth and scored on a single by Yonder Alonso and an outfield error.

Roger Kieschnick lifted a sacrifice fly to give the BeachBoys a 2-0 lead and Yuji Onizaki added an RBI single in the inning.

Yuhei Takai (2-1) struck out five over five scoreless innings for the win. He walked three and struck out five.

Chris Hatcher of the CaneFires (12-13) hit a two-run home run in the seventh to cut the lead to 3-2.

Jeremy Papelbon recorded the final out for his league-leading fourth save. The game was halted after seven innings by mutual agreement.

At Les Murakami Stadium, Kyle Martin hit a two-run home run and Jun Hyeok Heo and three relievers combined on a six hitter as the North Shore Honu beat the Honolulu Sharks, 5-1.

Heo (1-3) allowed four hits in three shutout innings for North Shore (11-14) against Honolulu (13-12).


GOLF

COTNER FALLS SHORT

Kamehameha Schools graduate Keoke Cotner shot a fourth round 1-over-par 73 yesterday and did not advance in the PGA Tour Qualifying School First Stage Tournament at Spring, Texas.

Cotner finished tied for 31st at 288. The top 23 and ties advanced to the second stage tournament.

Four other golfers with Hawai'i ties are competing in other first stage tournaments.

Jim Seki (70—210, tied for 27th) and Casey Watabu (68—212, tied 34th) at Hollister, Calif.

Matt Kodama (73—222, tied 39th) at Santee, Calif.

Pierre-Henri Soero (73—216, tied 30th) at Palm City, Fla.


VOLLEYBALL

UHH TOPS HPU IN FOUR

Fabiane Seben had 19 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Hawai'i Pacific 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-20 yesterday in Pacific West Conference women's volleyball at UHH Gymnasium.

Mary Claire Bolo added 15 kills and Josimara Pinheiro 13 for UHH (19-7 overall, 8-4 PacWest). Teammate Emily Tooker had 51 assists.

Julia Gruszecka led HPU (10-12, 6-5) with 11 kills.
