Hawaii's Deptula honored

University of Hawai'i sophomore defender Chelsea Deptula was named the Western Athletic Conference soccer Offensive Player of the Week in the final week of the regular season.

Deptula earned her first career weekly honor after heading in the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute in Hawai'i's 2-1 victory over host Boise State, which secured the Rainbow Wahine the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament.


SURFING

ABUBO KNOCKED OUT

Megan Abubo of Waialua was eliminated in the second round of the Movistar Classic Mancora Peru women's surfing contest yesterday.

The first, second and third rounds were completed yesterday in 2- to 3-foot waves at Mancora, Northern Peru.

Abubo was the only Hawai'i surfer in the contest. Melanie Bartels of Wai'anae withdrew prior to the start of the event.

The contest is the sixth of eight stops on the 2008 Women's World Championship Tour. The final two events will be in Hawai'i.

WEBER ADVANCES

University of Hawai'i junior Andreas Weber defeated Brock Newton, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, yesterday in the final round of qualifying for the main draw of the Waikoloa Futures USTA Pro Circuit Tournament on the Big Island.

The main draw of the tournament begins today. Singles play begins at 10 a.m., and the doubles starts at 1 p.m.
