Salutes

• Pam Arnsberger, professor and researcher at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's School of Social Work, has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for Senior Researchers at Queens University in Northern Ireland. She will study and evaluate outcomes of consumer-based caregiver models of service delivery for the elderly.

Her area of research has been primarily in aging with an emphasis on the development of community-based long-term-care service delivery. Her recent work included surveys on eldercare for the Hawai'i Legislature, for which she was awarded a Na Lima Kokua award from the Hawai'i Pacific Gerontological Society.

• The Department of Education's 2008 annual incentive and service awards were recently given. Recipients are:

Darryl Nakagawa, school food services manager at Highlands Intermediate School. He promotes healthy eating habits while delivering 1,700 meals a day. He believes in proactively planning and implementing program initiatives so that students can function to their fullest potential.

Sustained Superior Performance awardees were:

Berginio Barent, school custodian at Kihei Elementary, Maui District, known for his reliability and ability to motivate others.

Aliki Labrador, account clerk, Windward District Office, Windward O'ahu District, who juggles multiple demands with competence, efficiency and a smile.

Ellen Nakamoto, private secretary, Central District Office, Central O'ahu District, an exceptional communicator, is able to make complex subjects understandable.

Peter Rayno, school security attendant, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, Kaua'i District, who helps others while making his rounds on campus, and maintains a calm demeanor and rapport that helps to diffuse volatile situations.

Stephen Young, school custodian, 'Anuenue Elementary School, Honolulu District, whose diligence has transformed 'Anuenue into a clean and safe campus, and is dedicated to making every school activity a success.

Certificates of Achievement were given to:

Nelson Corpuz, custodian, Maui High School, Maui District, whose willingness to help others and work ethic are legendary at Maui High.

Kazumi Ishihiro, school administrative services assistant, Holomua Elementary School, Leeward O'ahu District, whose expertise in school operations has been instrumental in Holomua's becoming the largest elementary "multi-track" school in the state.

The Radford Complex Resource Teachers from the Central O'ahu District are team of the year. Team members are Linda Nakashima and Tricia Tamayose-Okamura. They work together to provide the finest learning environment for students, parents, teachers, and adult learners.

Other Award of Merit teams were:

Hokulani Elementary School custodial staff, Honolulu District, Reynaldo Bergonio, Wayne Katayama and Larry Ohta.

Holomua Elementary School office staff, Leeward O'ahu District: Gina Acosta, Kazumi Ishihiro, Ellen Nakamura, Addie Tufono, Renee Whitaker and Gaylyn Wilkerson.

Kaua'i High School cafeteria staff, Kauai District: Kaui Giminiz-Bustamante, Belinda Gonda, Marsha Miyasato, Michael Ng and Wade Tasaka.

Supplemental Education Services, Windward O'ahu District: Kristi Carvalho, Diane Tanaka, Gaye Terayama and Susan Yamamoto.
