Mark Chun takes a 40-point lead in the Player of the Year standings into this weekend's Amatour Tour Championship at Kapolei Golf Course. The tour finale offers double points, or 500 to the winner, which gives anyone in the top 11 a chance to become Player of the Year.

Chun has collected 1,030 points this year, winning the Battle at Klipper in August and finishing second at the Turtle Bay Season Kick-off. He earned Player of the Year honors in 2003, Amatour's second season.

Eric Sonnenberg, who has won twice this year and fell in a playoff with Travis Toyama at the Olomana Shootout, is 40 points back. Sonnenberg was the 2007 Player of the Year and is defending a title this week.

Paul Kimura (977.5 points), Mike Kawate (892.5) and Layne Morita (875) all are within 155 points of Chun. Golfers are also trying to earn the 24 exemptions for the 2009 season.

KONO LEADS UCLA

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono scorched the Ginn Resort in Orlando, Fla. Sunday, firing a pair of 6-under-par 66s during qualifying for the sixth annual Collegiate Match Play Championship. Kono, a UCLA freshman, had 13 birdies and one bogey.

The Bruins, ranked third in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, finished fifth in the tournament, which ended Tuesday. Kono, ranked 31st individually, played No. 1 for UCLA. Her teammates include NCAA All-Americans Tiffany Joh and Maria Jose Uribe.

The second annual Patriot Golf Day, a nationwide campaign to support families of military veterans who have been disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty, produced donations of more than $1.7 million. The campaign, which benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation, is jointly supported by The PGA of America and the USGA. Donations included $130,000 from captain Paul Azinger and the 12 members of the victorious U.S. Ryder Cup Team.
