HPU soccer in title chase

James Terry scored two goals and assisted on the third as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Dixie State, 3-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's soccer match at Atherton Field in Kane'ohe.
Terry scored at the 16:58 and 89:39 marks and assisted on Andre Whitt's goal at 67:52 to help the Sea Warriors improve to 8-2-1 in the PacWest (10-5-2 overall) and keep alive their conference title hopes.
HPU trails Notre Dame de Namur (8-1-2), which defeated Chaminade yesterday. The Sea Warriors need to beat Grand Canyon tomorrow and have Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat NDNU to win their first PacWest championship.
Kevin Young scored for Dixie (5-9-1, 5-6-1).

SURFING
ISLE SURFERS ADVANCE
Hawai'i surfers Bonga Perkins, Kekoa Uemura, Ned Snow and Duane DeSoto won their respective first-round heats in the Oxbow World Longboard Tour contest yesterday.
The first round was run in 2- to 3-foot waves at San Onofre Beach, Calif.
Perkins, who is the No. 3 seed for the contest, had a near-perfect score of 9.1 (out of 10) for his best wave.
"I didn't know that the judges were going to give me that high of a score," Perkins said. "I just wanted to get that big hit on the outside. I know that the judges are looking for the outside maneuvers, especially when there are not many sets coming through."
Snow tied for the highest total heat score of the day. His two best waves received scores of 9.4 and 7.75 for a total of 17.15.
DeSoto won his first-round heat with a score of 6.2 in the final seconds.
As first-round winners, Perkins, Snow, Uemura and DeSoto advanced directly to the third round.
Five other Hawai'i surfers did not win in the first round and will have to compete in the second round, where eliminations begin. Those surfers are Rusty Keaulana, Kai Lenny, Dino Miranda, Keegan Edwards and Kai Sallas.
The contest is the final stop on the 2008 World Longboard Tour. The 2008 world champion will be determined on the final day of this contest.
BASEBALL
HONU ROUT BEACHBOYS
Matt McBride had three hits and two RBIs as North Shore beat Waikiki, 11-1, last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.
Starting pitcher Jason Godin earned the win for the Honu (13-16), allowing four hits and one run while striking out five in five innings.
Tony Thomas Jr. had two hits for the BeachBoys (16-13).
Earlier, Honolulu (14-14) and West Oahu (14-14) played to a scoreless tie in a game called after nine innings when both sides agreed that their pitching staffs could not handle the extra work if the game were to continue.

LAJOLA ADVANCES
University of Hawai'i sophomore Dennis Lajola defeated Chris Wettengel, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, yesterday in the round of 32 of the Waikoloa Futures USTA Pro Circuit Tournament at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel on the Big Island.
Lajola will play Chase Buchanan in the round of 16.
In other singles involving players with Hawai'i ties, UH junior Andreas Weber lost to Sheeva Parbhu, 7-6 (6), 6-1; UH freshman Leo Rosenberg lost to Andrey Kumantsov, 7-5, 7-5; and Punahou alum Ikaika Jobe lost to Ty Trombetta, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
GOLF
UH FINISHES 12TH
The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a final-round 287 yesterday to finish 12th in the Kaua'i Collegiate Invitational at the Puakea Golf Course in Lihu'e.
The Warriors finished with a 6-over 870 total. San Diego won the 14-team tournament by 15 strokes with 272—825.
Derek Wallace of runner-up UNC Wilmington won medalist honors, shooting a final-round 8-under 64 to finish at 15-under 201. San Diego's Jake Yount was a shot behind after a 67.
San Diego freshman Alex Ching, a Punahou School alum, tied for fourth with 67—205. TJ Kua led UH, finishing tied for 15th with 71—212.
