Litter, erosion control project in Waimanalo today

Advertiser Staff

An Adopt-a-Stream litter and erosion control project takes place today at Kahawai Stream in Waimanalo from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Students from Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate schools are the adoptees of this portion of the stream.

Their tasks include planting native ground cover, water sampling and litter removal.

The goals of the project are to create awareness of non-point pollution, provide information tips on protecting our waters, encourage partnerships between citizens and government and motivate positive behavioral change to keep streams healthy.

Volunteers are welcome. The crew will meet at the Kahawai Stream Bridge across from L&L Drive-In in Waimanalo. Volunteers receive a T-shirt and samples of geotextile matting, which is surface cover for soil to reduce erosion from rainfall.
