Haleiwa's Bonga Perkins wins world longboard title

Bonga Perkins of Hale'iwa is the 2008 world champion of longboard surfing.

Perkins, 36, clinched his second career world title by winning the Oxbow World Longboard Tour contest today at San Clemente, Calif.

The final day of the contest was run in 2- to 3-foot waves at San Onofre Beach, Calif.

Perkins won four heats during the day, including a victory over France's Antoine Delperon in the one-on-one final. Perkins took the early lead with an 8.75 (out of 10) on his first wave of the heat. He then clinched the victory with an 8.2 on his final wave.

Perkins' top two waves scored a total of 16.95 points to top Delpero's total of 13.9.

Perkins received $10,000 for the victory. His first world title came in 1996.

Ned Snow of the Big Island tied for third place. He lost to Perkins in the semifinals.
